Bassiani

Akaki Tsereteli Ave 2 – Tbilisi, Georgia

In the world of electronic music, few clubs have achieved the status of a cultural symbol for their country. Bassiani is one of the exceptions. Opened in 2014 beneath the stands of Georgia’s largest stadium, it quickly became not only the most important techno club in the Caucasus but also a place associated with freedom, social activism, and a new identity for Tbilisi.

Bassiani is located beneath Dinamo Arena, the largest stadium in Georgia. The main dance floor was built in the disused basin of a former Olympic swimming pool, which had been abandoned for years. The raw concrete walls, vast space, and industrial character of the venue became one of the club’s most recognizable features.

The project was designed by Zviad Gelbakhiani, Tato Getia, and Naja Orashvili. Before opening the club under the stadium, they organized events in warehouses along the Kura River. In 2014, they moved to their current location, creating a venue that was meant to rival the most important clubs in Europe.

Within a few years, Bassiani became the center of Georgia’s burgeoning electronic scene. The club began regularly hosting leading techno artists while promoting local producers and DJs. Resident Advisor described it as the premier techno club in Tbilisi as early as 2016.

The club features two main spaces. In addition to the main dance floor, there is also Horoom, a smaller venue that has become one of the most important safe spaces for the LGBTQ+ community in Georgia.

The most significant moment in Bassiani’s history came in May 2018. Georgian police carried out a high-profile raid on Bassiani and another club in Tbilisi. The raid sparked mass protests, during which thousands of people danced in front of the parliament building, demanding changes to the restrictive drug law and greater civil liberties. From that moment on, Bassiani ceased to be perceived solely as a club. It became a symbol of the young generation of Georgians, who began to express their social and political views through club culture.

Today, Bassiani is one of the country’s most recognizable cultural brands. The club attracts guests from around the world and regularly appears in rankings of the world’s most important electronic clubs. At the same time, it remains a place strongly connected to the local scene and the social changes taking place in Georgia. Unlike many famous clubs in Western Europe, Bassiani developed from the outset in a country with a much more conservative social environment. This is why its history is often described not only as a music club success but also as a story of cultural and civic change.
