A38

Petőfi híd, 1117 – Budapest, Hungary

A38 is a repurposed Ukrainian stone-carrier ship turned cultural venue moored on the Buda side of the Danube River near Petőfi Bridge. It operates as a renowned concert hall, nightclub, and restaurant, known for fusing industrial heritage with contemporary music and art programming.

History and concept

Moored permanently on the Danube since 2003, A38 was created by Hungarian architect Tamás Borsos and a team of artists who transformed a decommissioned Ukrainian cargo barge into a floating arts complex. The ship’s name refers both to its registry number and to the highway sign symbolizing travel and connection, a metaphor for cultural exchange.

Structure and facilities

The vessel’s interior was redesigned to host multiple functions: a below-deck concert hall with professional acoustics, a panoramic restaurant and bar with views of the river and Pest skyline, a rooftop terrace, and gallery spaces for visual arts. Its design juxtaposes heavy steel engineering with modern minimalist décor.

Cultural significance

A38 has become a central node in Budapest’s nightlife and international touring circuit. It regularly features Hungarian and global acts across genres—rock, electronic, jazz, world, and experimental music—and hosts film screenings, exhibitions, and DJ sets. Its programming emphasizes artistic diversity and collaboration between local and international creatives.

Recognition

The venue has received multiple international accolades, including “Best Bar in the World” (Lonely Planet, 2012) and repeated mentions among Europe’s top concert venues. It symbolizes the city’s dynamic cultural identity and creative reuse of industrial riverfront spaces.
