The Rex Club, located in the heart of Paris, is a true legend and a pillar that has defined the city’s nightlife culture for decades. More than just a club, it is a hub for underground music that prioritizes sound and artistic quality.
It is located in the basement of the famous Art Deco cinema Le Grand Rex in the 2nd arrondissement of Paris (on the Grands Boulevards).
It opened as a nightclub in 1973 (originally a luxury brasserie and dance hall since 1932).
In 2023, the club, which was celebrating 35 years of electronic music, opened a new chapter. The year 1988 was long gone, but the Rex Club was still alive and kicking. Since then, all the night owls who have passed through its doors have a more or less clear story about the REX. In the summer of 2023, extensive renovations were carried out with the aim of preserving its fundamental identity.
Turning Point (1988): After being a disco club in the 70s and a rock/alternative club in the 80s, in 1988 it was transformed into the first electronic music club in Paris.
It is recognized for having catapulted techno and house music in France. Legendary French DJ Laurent Garnier played a crucial role, especially with his famous “Wake Up” parties in the 1990s.
One of the most acclaimed features of the Rex Club is its commitment to sound quality, above glamour and distractions.
The club boasts a high-performance sound system that is unique in the world. In 2006 (and recently updated, including a renovation in 2023), it was equipped with approximately 70 speakers distributed evenly throughout the room.
Unmatched Acoustics: This system ensures an immersive listening experience and “unmatched” sound, where bass lines and rhythms are perceived with maximum fidelity.
The programming is cutting-edge and firmly oriented towards electronic music, focusing mainly on Techno, House, Deep House, and Minimal.
Rex Club has hosted virtually all the “monsters” of the global and local electronic scene, including icons such as:
Laurent Garnier
Jeff Mills
Carl Cox
Miss Kittin
Daft Punk (in their early days)
It maintains high-quality resident DJs who ensure a consistent musical line-up.
The Rex Club remains true to its underground roots, without excessive artifice, focusing on music as the sole protagonist.
It is a club that is not part of the “well-dressed” world and has a relaxed atmosphere, seeking to attract anyone with “a good ear and purity of heart,” promoting an authentic clubbing culture.
The club is committed to prevention. It is a partner in initiatives to promote a culture of responsible partying (Fêtez Clairs) and its staff have been trained in the prevention of sexual and gender-based violence.
