Kater

Holzmarktstraße 25 – Berlin, Germany

Kater (until 2025, Kater Blau) is one of Berlin’s most important house and techno clubs. It is the direct successor to the legendary Bar25 and Kater Holzig projects, which shaped the city’s alternative culture after 2000.

History and Location Changes

Bar25 (2003–2010)

It all began at Bar25 on the Spree River. The club was famous for its hours-long parties, confetti, artistic chaos, and “adult playground” atmosphere. Over time, it became a symbol of the Berlin electronic scene.

    Kater Holzig (2010–2014)

After Bar25 closed, the crew moved across the river to a former soap factory, where Kater Holzig was established. The club quickly gained international recognition, but from the outset, it operated on a temporary basis. Financial problems and the expiration of its lease led to its closure.

      Kater Blau / Kater (2014–present)

In the summer of 2014, the club returned to almost the former location of Bar25, becoming part of the Holzmarkt 25 project. Since 2025, it has operated under the simplified name Kater.

        Present

Kater is one of the pillars of the so-called “Berlin Weekend Philosophy”—here, a party isn’t a few hours long event, but a social experience spanning the entire weekend. The club played a key role in the creation of Holzmarkt 25, one of the most prominent examples of grassroots urban regeneration in Europe. Artist studios, creative spaces, restaurants, galleries, and public riverside areas have been built around the club.

Currently Kater remains one of the most visited electronic clubs in Berlin. It organizes regular weekend music marathons, events for house and techno collectives, and collaborates with artists associated with the Katermukke label, which emerged from the Kater Holzig era.
