Gare Porto

R. da Madeira 182 – Porto, Portugal

Gare Porto is one of the most important electronic music clubs in Portugal. Located on Rua da Madeira, right next to the historic São Bento train station in central Porto, it has long been a symbol of the Portuguese underground scene.

The club opened in 2008 with the ambition to create a venue that could compete with the most esteemed clubs in Europe. From the outset, the focus was on a stark, dark space, a powerful sound system, and a program focused almost exclusively on electronic music. The place is located directly next to the São Bento train station, and its industrial character reflects the surrounding railway infrastructure. For many, it is the first place associated with Porto’s club scene.

Gare has remained true to the underground for years. Fridays traditionally feature house and drum & bass events, while Saturdays are primarily dedicated to techno. The club regularly hosts both Portuguese artists and international names associated with the European techno scene. Unlike many contemporary clubs, it didn’t build its reputation on elaborate stage design or visuals. Its reputation rests primarily on its artist selection, sound quality, and dancefloor-focused atmosphere.

Gare played a key role in the development of the local electronic scene. While Lisbon was perceived as the center of Portuguese clubbing, Porto, thanks to Gare, developed its own identity based on the rawer and more technical sound of techno. The club has become a meeting place for local collectives, DJs, and producers, as well as a must-see for international artists visiting Portugal. After more than fifteen years of operation, Gare remains one of the most important clubs in the country.

It regularly hosts events featuring leading representatives of contemporary techno, and its programming includes both local collectives and artists associated with the international underground scene.
