Today we are talking with Yetzaline Leon (Yetzinha), born in Caracas who currently resides in Bogotá / Colombia and tells us how being a Bachelor of Plastic Arts she has fallen in love with tattooing. Enjoy it!
Astrid: How long have you worked as a tattoo artist?
Yetzinha: I started exploring the world of tattooing since I was a child, the friends of my older brothers some were already starting to make tattoos since they were teenagers and there was always contact with tattoo sessions at home, so in 2012 I made my first tattoo to a friend to learn the technique, since I had someone to teach me the basics with patience. In 2015 I decided to start working in tattoo studios to get serious with this technique and continue learning.
Astrid: What motivates you to keep tattooing?
Yetzinha: It motivates me to be able to develop my own style, to continue studying, to know how this whole world of ink is evolving.
Astrid: What style of tattoo do you like most on a personal level?
Yetzinha: Neotraditional / Black work / Japanese and neo Japanese.
Astrid: What style of tattoo do you think you stand out the most at?
Yetzinha: I’ve been studying Neotraditional a lot and that’s what I love to adapt my drawing to.
Astrid: Which ink brands do you think are the best and which ones do you use?
Yetzinha: I use Dynamic, Dermaglo in some tones and ‘Solid Ink’ I like a lot.
Astrid: How do you think your work influences society?
Yetzinha: Well, from the point of view of artist influences if I leave messages or try to give some criticism, but as a tattoo artist I do not think there is much influence for now, but if you ask me as a person, I work in influence, trying to do well, not being egolatra, helping as much as I can and always sending good energy to others, For one does not know what evolutionary processes others are going through.
Astrid: What kind of machines do you use and why?
Yetzinha: I use coils, for solidity, habit and love hehe.
Rotary for color.
Astrid: Do you belong to any crew or artistic group?
Yetzinha: Artistic and graffiti crew APC (Animalez Poder Cultura).
Graffiti crew and Amigos PSC (Pure criminal sauce).
Astrid: What other jobs do you have besides being a tattoo artist?
Yetzinha: I have a degree in Plastic Arts, an empirical illustrator and I have been doing Graffiti since I was 15.
Astrid: Do you consider tattooing as a source of work despite the taboo that has always surrounded it?
Yetzinha: Of course, nowadays the taboo has disappeared a lot, and the people who used to frown when they saw you no longer do so much, even their younger relatives are surely or already thinking about getting their first tattoo. So long live the ink, and love the tattoo.
Thank you Yetzinha for giving us some of your time and trust!
