Transformator is a club located in the city of Wrocław, Poland and it became one of the most legendary clubs in the city’s nightlife scene. It has played an important role in shaping the electronic music culture in Poland, hosting many influential DJs and producers over the years.
The club has a reputation for its unique atmosphere, characterized by a raw and industrial aesthetic. The venue features a spacious dance floor, a bar, and a second stage, as well as a state-of-the-art sound system and lighting setup.
Transformator was opened in the second half of 2018 after a series of trial events, in the warehouse space of the former organic food market at 57 Tęczowa Street in Wrocław. The number of hidden passages, bunkers and secret tunnels in the club is mind blowing. It is not entirely clear what happened in this place before and during the war.
One of the first events that took place in Transformator was Holos with the legends of Czech techno. The second stage was given to the locals from the Zajezdnia collective. Its name “OSTRO” comes from the fact that strong styles were played on it from the beginning, but mainly because such an inscription was formed from the remains of the “GASTRO” sign hanging there.
There was nothing inside. An empty space with white walls, two bathrooms and a few loose pallets to sit on. Where the backstage is – there was a smoking room, where the main bar is now – there was a backstage. Over time, Anton, then an employee of the club and a resident, put his Cinquecento as an element of decoration. Anyone could enter the car parked in the middle of the hall.
Later, the car replaced the bowl for skateboarding, placed vis a vis the stage, and the walls, losing their charm, were covered with the works of the best local graffiti artists and street art tycoons.
He sees the club’s ideological and program roots in the first New Year’s Eve party and the after party after it. Tęczowa played for two days. The whole city came to see what was going on, all sorts of environments. If a place ended a party, its guests, deejays and managers came to Transformator. It was a unique meeting, the founding myth, the beginning of the TFR legend, the emergence of its spirit, an example of openness, a tradition that we still refer to.
Transformator is known for its diverse music programming, which ranges from techno and house to electro, IDM, and experimental music. The club has hosted many renowned artists, such as DJ Hell, Ellen Allien, and Miss Kittin, as well as local talents and up-and-coming DJs from around the world.
In recent years, Transformator has faced some challenges due to the changing landscape of the electronic music scene, with some other clubs and spaces emerging in Wrocław. Nevertheless, the club remains an important institution for electronic music lovers in the city and continues to attract a loyal following of fans and visitors.
