Szymon Weiss – the first Pole in Stil vor Talent, remixed by techno giants Landstrumm and Tolkachev, a renowned mix and mastering engineer at the Warsaw Institute of Sound. Composer of the electronic-symphonic Weiss Video Orchestra. His album “Only One Life Left” is surprising.
First listen to “Only One Life Left”: a gargantuan journey based on powerful techno. The album proves that many things can be said in this field, that techno can become a means of expression and an emotional trip. Like a private collection of photographs, and each one reflects a particular stage in the artist’s life.
The work was born in the face of near-death experiences, and each title is another stage. Miss You So Much is a juicy bass abstract, broken by Weiss’s characteristic lyrical harmonic layers, but the title indicates Wertherian disappointment. The three-part Head Collision is like a novella in three acts. It recalls Vogel, Landstrumm, pioneers of the genre, but it is broken by another very lyrical image. The hopeful Wave Penetrating and Smoke Monolith would be hits of the groove genre, but their space is too starry, and on top of that Weiss plays jazz solos on the Moog. The title Only One Life Left is like a genre refrain. It surprises with the instrumental arrangement of a live band, the unconventional rhythm of the bass drum, the great melodies of fantastic synthesizers. The album closes with the ambient Collision Recovered and is a record of deep gratitude for life. The artist falls into a strong reverie and manifests the will to live, at the thought that an accident could have fatally split his head.
“Only One Life Left” is an album that takes the listener on a fascinating journey. A discovery mix of contrasting sounds and styles. Although strong techno, it is a number with a plot. This is a large work, in a dimension unseen on the domestic scene. It will certainly be remembered as an expression of Szymon Weiss’s extraordinary sensitivity and technical proficiency. Weiss, an electronic-symphonic rebel and pioneer of this movement in Poland, is an unusual figure in Polish club culture. He contests cliché and reproduction. He despises Polish creativity, which is only a very good copy of Western movements. In his music, he combines hypnotizing rhythms and intriguing, harmonious sounds. His productions oscillate on the border of acid techno, experimental and dark wave, and currently he combines them with the great electronic-symphonic spectacle of Weiss Video Orchestra, performing with a 16-person chamber orchestra. But it is the electronic “Only One Life Left” that is his latest release.
