Report: Instytut Festival 2023

Instytut Festival, taking place in the Modlin Fortress in Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki on June 16-17, 2023, is another event on the musical map of Poland, which attracts with its great location and extraordinary line-up. In addition, we get 3 stages (congratulations for the great separation of them from each other), atmospheric lighting and a diverse gastro zone. How was it? See for yourself!

Musically, it started with a phenomenal performance by Ina West, who, in a duet with a drummer, showed what a good festival opening show can look like. There was energy and fun combined with artistic values, and in addition, Ina, like a stage eater, showed her great comfort and lightness of advanced live playing. Quite solid performances also appeared thanks to artists such as Keith Carnal, Stanislav Tolkachev and Angelo Mike. Although Friday evening was sprinkled with cyclical rainfall, this did not discourage the audience from having fun until dawn.

Electronic sounds really bombarded everywhere, which, if you’re not that much of a connoisseur of this type of music, could make your head spin after a few hours. Many artists presented really nice sets, but as always, we are able to divide them into better and worse ones. Such situations happen at almost every festival, because it is impossible for everyone to be in the same shape on a given evening. And although this evening (or rather these two evenings) there were a few colorless sets, it’s worth focusing on what’s good.

At Instytut Festival we experienced many really solid performances by artists who showed how real professionals approach their duties. I must definitely mention Arnaud Rebotini here, who, surrounded on all sides by various types of synthesizers, gave a real show of his skills in front of the gathered audience. Even a temporary problem with the microphone, which the artist threw on the floor as a result of frustration, did not prevent him from doing so. You may not approve of this type of behavior, but it shows the artist’s serious approach to each of his performances and the position he is in. That evening, no one even questioned his behavior, because it was Arnaud who was the king of the stage at that moment.

At the Rave Stage, performances such as the one presented by Paula Temple could be tempting. Despite a rather boring and predictable beginning, the later stage of the performance was a real energy bomb. Legs were rushing to dance by themselves and it’s a pity that only a few sets on this stage were more suited to a neutral listener. I understand the uncompromising nature and the fact that the Open Stage was intended for the general public, but festivals are governed by slightly different rules and I think that sometimes it would be worth remembering that. Perhaps it was also simply due to the type of invited guests.

On the Panorama Stage, the performance of the artist nicknamed GiZ was worth recommending, who during her one and a half hour set put in motion probably everyone who came to this stage even for a moment. The fact that it was far away from the other two, of course, also had an impact on the attendance, which was not the same as, for example, on the Open Stage. However, this did not prevent those who, during light rainfall, pulsed to the rhythm of dance music as if nothing had happened. Great respect.

The whole festival is certainly a very cool project that brings together the environment in love with electronic music. The organizer certainly cannot be denied the appropriate commitment and willingness to strive for perfection. One of the aspects worth considering for the future is definitely a better arrangement of the gastro zone, which was located right next to the Rave stage at this year’s festival.

To sum up: when it comes to location – I think that the organizers chose one of the better places, because how not to attract people by the fact that we are less than an hour away from the capital by car? In addition, the Mazovian Warsaw-Modlin Airport is also nearby, so those willing to attend this event do not have to choose a long route or stand in traffic jams just before entering the festival area. If you only have a free weekend, you like to spend time outdoors, and electronic music is no stranger to you, then you should definitely go to this festival next year. Who knows, maybe the weather will be a little better then?
