Today we are with Emanuel Delgado, a circus artist born in Venezuela but currently residing in Brazil. He tells us about his journey and wonderful lifestyle thanks to the circus. Enjoy it!
Astrid: What sparked your interest in the circus?
Emanuel: I started doing circus out of curiosity at age 14, what interested me most was juggling and as the more I played the more tricks I learned and the more fun it was, as a child I did not fit into sports but juggling gave me confidence, they taught me that if I try many times I can achieve everything I set my mind to.
Astrid: What are the skills or techniques you practice within your artistic work?
Emanuel: After all this time I experienced doing various circus modalities currently working with equilíbrios on the bamba rope, unicycle and hand stop, acrobatics on the cyr wheel and the Chinese mastro, juggling with bouncing balls and manipulation of contact ball, I also use clown and theater techniques in my presentations to bring the best of me to the public.
Astrid: How many years have you been training to achieve the tricks you currently do?
Emanuel: At almost 10 years I gave myself to the art of circus as the main form of work, that made me be in constant evolution always studying and training a lot .thanks to that I developed a body awareness that little by little was helping me in each modality I train. For me all the skills I do in a certain way connect.
Astrid: Have you traveled the world thanks to your artistic work? Tell us about it.
Emanuel: Thanks to circus art I have already toured many places in Brazil performing at festivals, meetings, canvas circus, theaters, musicals, events and circus conventions. I’m currently preparing to do a season in Portugal in a big show.
Astrid: Have you ever been in an accident at a show or rehearsal?
Emanuel: During the shows I did not suffer any accidents, but in 2019 during a training with the cyr wheel I fell above my shoulder and lasted 2 months of rest.
Astrid: What is your training routine like?
Emanuel: I like to train various modalities so I vary the training with the circus equipment and along with that I maintain a routine of running, physical preparation of strength and flexibility.
Astrid: Any figure or artist that inspires you?
Emanuel: I have several references like Buster Keaton and James Thierrée but I think what inspires me the most is the audience.
Astrid: How long have you not visited your home country?
Emanuel: It’s been almost 10 years since I left Venezuela and I hope soon to be able to return.
Astrid: Do you belong to any crew or are you independent?
Emanuel: Since 2015 together with my partner Caroline Voltolini we set up the Pirate Circus Company, since then we have been circulating Brazil presenting our shows and performance in ensembles with several artists.
Astrid: Would you do this for the rest of your life?
Emanuel: I found in the circus what we all look for, to live doing what you like.
Thank you Ema for allowing me to interview you for Underton! May you continue to succeed and be able to travel the world with your art.
