Today we are with David Olaves, a young artist born in Maracaibo, Edo. Zulia, Venezuela. He currently resides in Caracas. A guy who overflows talent wherever he goes! Enjoy it!
Astrid: What artistic work have you developed throughout your life?
David: I started with painting, I liked to draw portraits, and in high school I got to paint most of the murals. I also liked music and learned to play guitar. I started music studies at a choir school that I don’t really remember the name. The truth is that I lasted about a month, because in theory they scraped me but I liked the ear and rhythm classes. Then I learned about poetry from a cousin from Maracaibo who came to visit us along with his family. I showed them the “songs” I was writing, and when he read it he told me that was poetry. I didn’t understand what he told me and he showed it to me. We searched the internet for some authors that he recommended to me and I liked them a lot, the first author was Mario Benedetti, then he looked for Jaime Sabines, and then Juan Gelman and that’s where he went and I got stuck. Then I moved to Caracas and finished my high school here, and that’s when I got to know the theater. I studied theater in several schools such as Juana Sujo, TNT Rajatablas, UNEARTE and graduated from the TET Artistic Training Center. Studying theater and having experience in cinema, I was struck by the creative process to make a film. Then I started inventing myself and at the beginning of quarantine I began to experiment with the audiovisual, and since then I have not stopped playing.
Astrid: Do you like being on stage performing a play or performing in front of the camera?
David: I like both, although my focus is on cinema. But I always go back to theater, it’s indispensable for me.
Astrid: What is your favorite genre in terms of acting?
David: I don’t care much about genre, I enjoy the opportunity to do a drama, or some action, comedy… etc..
Astrid: Have you participated in projects at the national level? Tell us about that and what artistic work you participated with.
David: I was in the series Caminos de libertad, directed by Luis Alberto Lamata. It really was an amazing experience where I learned a lot of things about production. I participated as an extra actor, during 4 weeks of shooting.
Astrid: When was your first experience as an actor?
David: A student short film. Like in 2015.
Astrid: What personal message do you try to project when you express yourself artistically?
David: I always want people to connect with whatever they are reading, watching, or hearing. Let them have something left, let them take it home, ask questions, think, reflect.
Astrid: What was the first feature film you participated in?
David: “Voy por ti” directed by Carmen Laroche.
Astrid: Any characters that inspire you?
David: Hamlet.
Astrid: Would you do this for the rest of your life?
David: Even after death lol.
